25 years of safari experience…

The reserve is owned, managed and run ‘hands on’ by the owners, the Bean family, who are now in their sixth generation and have owned the original farm, Orlando, since the early 1800’s. After nearly 25 years of experience in the safari business, Peter and his team have created a unique, relaxed and truly South African experience at Schotia.

Schotia has a huge open air lapa, reputedly among the largest in South Africa. It has reed and sneezewood walls and is open to the African skies, except for the outer ring where a traditionally thatched roof covers the dining tables and bar area. Inside the lapa there are several large ‘Schotia’ trees and a roaring log fire. Dinner is usually a mix of safari cuisine and traditional South African cooking, the exact menu depends on what is available on the day.

Just a short drive from Port Elizabeth, Addo or Grahamstown, Schotia is a unique experience not to be missed.

We should be talking about climate justice, not climate change said, SACSIS columnist, Dr. Dale McKinley.

Talking about climate justice highlights the fact that this problem is about the political economy, he argued.

McKinley also said that the climate change debate prefaces the serious divides in South African society and that we shouldn’t sugar coat this.

McKinley made these remarks at a roundtable discussion, which sought to ascertain how the South African media is reporting on climate change in the run up to COP17. The roundtable was co-hosted by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung South Africa Office and the South African Civil Society Information Service. It took place on November 11, 2011.

Keynote speakers at the event included: Brendan Boyle (Editor, Daily Dispatch), Sue Blaine (Environment and Development Editor, Business Day), Prof. Herman Wasserman, (Deputy Head of the School of Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University), Bobby Peek (Director, Groundwork) and Saliem Fakier (Head of the Living Planet Unit at the World Wildlife Fund and SACSIS columnist).
